Music For Media

Here are a number of previous commissions...

Portfolio

These tracks are pieces I have written for several films and a drama performances.

The tracks are available in this playlist on the right but the films and other media are currently unavailable for me to share at the request of the creators.

The Tracks:

The Elevator Ritual (TER)

This film is a Sci-Fi about a character who is tricked into a digital world by a mysterious voice in an earpiece. The soundtrack is composed primarily with synthesizers, both analogue and digital, to match the sci-fi themes of the film. An idea I worked into this soundtrack is that the further into the digital world the character gets, the more digital effects and sounds are used in the music, it's quite subtle but it's there.

The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas

This was a quick demo I made for someone who was making a film based on the film The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas in the style of a Wes Anderson short. I used this as an opportunity to study the compositional style of James Horner.

The Audition

This was a play about an unusual audition where an actress is manipulated by a director so she can be turned into a puppet and used by the system. It's a dark and edgy look at the showbiz system. I kept these themes in mind as I worked with the director to compose and produce Five tracks, ranging from ambient and electronica to jazz and experimental rock. This was a big project and pushed me to use all of my tools and knowledge.

Dear Daddy

This is a documentary where the director follows her mum as she looks for clues about her father that she had never had a chance to meet. At the end of the film she reads a letter that she penned to him at the end of the process. This is a deeply emotional film but it's also about discovery and family. I tried to balance these themes into a more classical soundtrack, featuring piano and strings.

Irish Picture in a UK Frame

This is a documentary about an Irish lady who has spent most of her life living in the West Midlands (UK) and the struggles she has faced over her life. The film tackles issues such as racism and discrimination. The soundtrack is based on Irish Folk music and was written with help from violinist Lydia Mahon.

Money

A short film about the social cost of money and re-evaluating what's really important in life. For this sound track I created on song that was synchronised to the footage. The director wanted me to use classical instruments with a beat towards the end.

Fika

Another documentary, this time about the Swedish tradition of having a coffee break. This is a pretty chilled out film so I just created a track I thought sounded like something you'd hear in a continental coffee shop, combining elements of jazz, blues and rock.

Dear Edward

This is an extremely emotional documentary where the director is interviewing his grandad about his life growing up as an orphan and his relationship with his family. I wanted to keep the soundtrack as simple as possible but also to match the heavy emotional content in the film so I used piano and a heavy reverb to create a thick ambience.

Letter to My Former Self (LTMFS)

This is a film where a dancer has to listen to her inner child to find the strength to be able to perform. She goes through a number of different locations and emotions so I made the tracks different from each other but similar at the same time, I wanted them to change with the film but sound coherent.

Earlier Work...

These tracks are pieces I wrote for films and other media in 2017.

Some of these are for a film about Satan receiving a letter meant for Santa called 'Dear Satan’. One is for a horror trailer in a similar style to American Horror Story and the rest are supplements for radio or spoken word recordings.

The tracks for 'Dear Satan' demonstrate a more conventional composition style using MIDI controlled instruments and synthesizers within ProTools. I was asked to compose something similar to the works of Danny Elfman, specifically the Nightmare Before Christmas' score. The aim here was to make something super cheesy but with a looming sense of something more sinister.

The horror track demonstrates more experimental, avantgarde, electronic composition style. This uses samples made by Paulstretching, granular synthesis and a homemade digital tape machine effect, I programmed myself in Pure Data.

I was approached by someone I met on a trip to Berlin a while ago to compose a soundscape for this spoken word film. He wanted a soundscape composed of ballet theatre sounds and some form of classical music. I decided to put an ambient spin on the music to create more of an interesting atmosphere.
